1. Firefox 3 and Windows Live Hotmail

Since I upgraded to firefox 3 on both my macs, the ‘full’ version of Widows Live Hotmail will not work, instead we get a plain old html mail app. Umm I’m sure mozilla did not remove javascript support from the browser, to this is a Windows Live issue. Can we have it fixed please?

Well I’ve actually been planning lately to move away from hotmail, I actually don’t know why I still use it, so if they fix it it’s ok and if they don’t I dont really care it will just push me towards dropping the service.

  2. The Perks of Being a Geek

There is some stuff that will ultimately piss you off when you’re in the IT business, and a geek as myself. People tend to think you know it all because “that’s what you do”. This is a tipical conversation from someone who barely knows you:

Them: “Hey, how do I make a macro in excel that i can edit myself and… (its all bla bla from here) bla bla bla bla bla…? ”

Me: “Uh what? I have no idea…”

Them: “But didn’t you go and study (insert IT-related career name here, in my case Software Engineering)?”

Me: “Well I’m sorry but I seem to have failed my Office I, Office II, and Office III courses”

WTF?, srsly, NO I DID NOT GET TAUGHT EVERYTHING THERE IS IN THE SOFTWARE UNIVERSE, and I couldn’t care less about it either.

So with no more preamble, here is the ultimate “Perks of being a Geek” list:

    1. You will always get a call from a family member asking a random Windows-related problem they are having.

    2. You are supposed to have the answer to item #1 with the following problem description: “It locked up.”

    3. Family friends are supposed to get free tech support 24/7. You won’t get paid more than the occasional soda or cookie while making the house call.

    4. You are THE ms office guru.

    5. Web designer = FREE WEBSITES FOR ALL

    6. You become tech support not only for their PC but also their ISP, cable company, microwave oven, remote controls, surround sound systems, digital watches, lamps and all sorts of electrical installations

    7. You are expected to know where everything is located in every existing piece of software by hard

I’m sure I’m missing a lot of other perks… I’ll be adding more along the way =)

  3. Things Web Designers Shouldn’t Do Pt. 2

As promised I’m continuing with my list of Things Web Designers Shouldn’t Do, here are more things I hate to see/use when I’m browsing:

Links that don’t open in Tabs (or in a new browser window for that sense): Tabs are an integral part of my browsing experience, whenever I’m reading, see a link I want to check out, I middle click it, boom new tab it’ll be there when I’m done reading whatever it is I’m reading.

Images that don’t open in Tabs: Using Javascript on Image galleries is ok if you want to give it some pizazz, but hey, I want to click the image and have it load in a new tab, if your gallery doesn’t do this = FAIL.

Making your code work ONLY in IE: I don’tgive a f*&k about IE, don’t make me use it, I don’t care if you want to be old school and Active-X the shit out your application. A while ago I was trying to use a feature on my bank’s website, guess what? activex only… yeah that sounds secure.

Don’t base your design on a picture: I’m actually guilty of falling for this one a few years back. Pictures are great… some are even fantastic but please don’t base your design on a large picture up top and some content below it. Sure, it will look awesome but I did no browse to your site to look at a picture. An example, the people at thiswebhost.com have a nice website, but is it really necessary to have a huge picture of a hot chick up top? Yeah, cause when I think hosting… I think hot chicks. NOT. This is what I’m expecting from a web hosting company.

  4. Did Google just un-indexed my site?

Ok I’m really pissed off at google right now. Some of you know I run a forum (http://el-sancocho.com) it’s in spanish, there’s no specific topic, just go in there and talk about what you want. Anyways that’s not the point, about 6 months ago or more, I added google adsense on the sidebar, as predicted I started getting revenue from the adsense program, then some forum member (to the day I don’t know who it was) clicked too many times on the adsense thing and google cancelled my account.

I waited about six months and appealed last week, google then replied that they will not reactivate my account because of violation of terms of use (hey, it’s a forum, srlsy, I freakin don’t know who was responsible for the clicking spree) so well nothing to do there I guess, I didn’t want to pick a fight with google.

Today I’m reading some SEO stuff and wanted to check against my forum and to my suprise my site is not showing up to any of the keywords it used to. Not even in the localized google page. GOOGLE: WTF!!! why would you people do that? It’s just doesnt make sense to me.. why would you remove my site from your index… did you find some conspiracy against you in my site?

I’m really mad at google for this. Google isn’t playing nice…
