1. Colombian iPhone Launch = EPIC FAIL

    IMG_1809.JPG

The iPhone was officially launched in Colombia today. I was very excited about this, and even more they were making a midnight launch, so you could go and get yourself an iPhone. Movistar and Comcel (Colombian cellphone carriers) are both selling the device today.

There were some people in line, waiting for midnight (I’ve been in line for around an hour, I was the 10th person in line, out of about 20). And a couple of really ridiculous fangirls. <- PLEASE click on this link.

Doors opened, I was the first at a counter, horrible, horrible attention BTW. Ok lets sign those papers and get myself a new iPhone, how much is it ma'am? Uhmm that'll be $1'230,000 (about US$660) for the 16GB model and it comes with a two year plan which costs about US$90. WTF!!! That is madness!!!

Ma'am I'd like an 8GB model, how much is that? Of course, that'll be about mhhh $910,000 (about US$500)... Of course, my WTF face was unforgettable... So shall we sign the papers? ... (walking away) No thanks. Cya later.

Oh and I forgot to mention, they don't carry the 8GB model until next week, that OR this is a really bad sales scam to make people buy de 16GB one.

So, with no more to say, the Colombian iPhone launch by Movistar is an EPIC FAIL. Although I'm sure people will buy the phone (a lot of people actually), BUT I don't want to get ripped off and get stuck with a really expensive two year contract. I'm about to buy my first car, I don't need another hole in my pocket right now.

Edit: For those who have been asking, I live in Barranquilla, Colombia

Update: The price list in US currency (I was actually charged more)

Thanks to Applecol.com for the price list.

But wait, there’s more! Go to minute 4:52 and look at Jobs himself setting the worldwide price for the iPhone

  2. Is Digg becoming a tabloid?

With sensationalist and other rather stupid stories on the rise and fewer good stories by the day, I must say digg is starting to disappoint. As an example here is a story that just made the digg frontpage: “Sneaker makers are seeing big dollars in little feet” … frontpage? really? ok…

Or how about this one I found the other day: [BREAKING] Scientists confirm the use of cheap sunglasses linked to eye cancer, followed by another one a few days later: [BREAKING] Use of flip flops linked to feet cancer… see my point? They’re tagged BREAKING and all. Also, we all know irresponsible exposure to the sun may cause skin cancer.

More examples! how about this one: “Study links hours in front of TV to Obesity”  oh, really?? wow I never imagined that slacking on a couch eating away and not getting exercise would get me fat. People, we can do better than this.

I can go on and on forever with examples, but I just want to point out that Digg is rapidly becoming into a stupid news site, it used to be better than this.

  3. Firefox 3 and Windows Live Hotmail

Since I upgraded to firefox 3 on both my macs, the ‘full’ version of Widows Live Hotmail will not work, instead we get a plain old html mail app. Umm I’m sure mozilla did not remove javascript support from the browser, to this is a Windows Live issue. Can we have it fixed please?

Well I’ve actually been planning lately to move away from hotmail, I actually don’t know why I still use it, so if they fix it it’s ok and if they don’t I dont really care it will just push me towards dropping the service.

  4. The Perks of Being a Geek

There is some stuff that will ultimately piss you off when you’re in the IT business, and a geek as myself. People tend to think you know it all because “that’s what you do”. This is a tipical conversation from someone who barely knows you:

Them: “Hey, how do I make a macro in excel that i can edit myself and… (its all bla bla from here) bla bla bla bla bla…? ”

Me: “Uh what? I have no idea…”

Them: “But didn’t you go and study (insert IT-related career name here, in my case Software Engineering)?”

Me: “Well I’m sorry but I seem to have failed my Office I, Office II, and Office III courses”

WTF?, srsly, NO I DID NOT GET TAUGHT EVERYTHING THERE IS IN THE SOFTWARE UNIVERSE, and I couldn’t care less about it either.

So with no more preamble, here is the ultimate “Perks of being a Geek” list:

    1. You will always get a call from a family member asking a random Windows-related problem they are having.

    2. You are supposed to have the answer to item #1 with the following problem description: “It locked up.”

    3. Family friends are supposed to get free tech support 24/7. You won’t get paid more than the occasional soda or cookie while making the house call.

    4. You are THE ms office guru.

    5. Web designer = FREE WEBSITES FOR ALL

    6. You become tech support not only for their PC but also their ISP, cable company, microwave oven, remote controls, surround sound systems, digital watches, lamps and all sorts of electrical installations

    7. You are expected to know where everything is located in every existing piece of software by hard

I’m sure I’m missing a lot of other perks… I’ll be adding more along the way =)
